See your skin with greater clarity

3D Mole Mapping is core to our skin assessments. Its advanced imaging technology provides a detailed record of your skin, forming a baseline for future monitoring.

Why choose 3D Mole Mapping?

Thorough skin documentation

Create a detailed visual record of your exposed skin that supports thorough skin assessments and potentially aids in the early detection of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Monitor changes to moles over time

Establish a baseline of your skin with detailed documentation of visible moles and skin lesions, supporting comparison and monitoring of changes over time.

Advanced 3D imaging technology

Powered by the Vectra WB360, advanced 3D imaging uses 92 high-resolution cameras to capture your exposed skin surface in seconds, creating a detailed digital map of your skin.

Dermatologist reviewed, clinician guided

Your 3D skin images are reviewed by a dermatologist, with your findings explained to you by your clinical team to help you understand your results and recommended next steps.

Early detection can make a difference

When melanoma is detected early (Stage 0–1), the 5-year survival rate is 99%, compared with 32–50% for later-stage disease (Stages 3–4).

How it works

Before your appointment

To ensure the most accurate results, please review the following instructions:

Arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for check-in.

Please be clean-shaven and avoid wearing any lotions or makeup on the day of your appointment.

Individuals with excess body hair are advised trimming to allow the cameras to scan the surface of your skin.

Review your personalized results.

Review your personalized health report with recommendations and next steps tailored to your assessment findings.

During your appointment

Our staff will explain the imaging process in detail.

You will be asked to change into a special garment and robe that will be provided to you. Please remove your clothing, jewelry, glasses and tie up long hair.

Next, you will stand in the Vectra WB360 imaging booth. You will see a number of bright flashes as the images are captured in less than 5 seconds. It’s completely painless and non-invasive.

Once the photos are captured, you can put the robe back on while our system processes the 3D mole map.

Moles that are identified as requiring further magnification photography will be photographed up-close with a handheld device called a dermatoscope.

After your appointment

Your 3D Mole Mapping results will be reviewed by our dermatologist, and you will be notified if a mole is found to be suspicious requiring follow-up.

Follow-up care is to be provided by your primary care provider.

FAQs

Who might benefit from 3D Mole Mapping?

3D Mole Mapping may be worth considering for people who:

  • Have a personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancers
  • Have a personal or family history of multiple abnormal moles
  • Have many moles (50+)
  • Have fair skin, a history of significant sunburns, chronic sun exposure or tanning bed use
  • Would like to proactively monitor changes in their moles and skin over time

Note: 3D Mole Mapping is not a replacement for regular primary care or dermatology visits. Continue to see your healthcare provider as recommended.

Is the Vectra WB360 covered by insurance?

It depends. The service may be covered by health spending accounts. Check with your plan to confirm coverage.

Is it safe? Is there any radiation involved?

Yes, it is safe for all patients. This system uses high resolution digital photography technology and does not produce any radiation or magnetic fields. The Vectra WB360 is licensed by Health Canada and the 3D total body mole mapping imaging technology is used at many renowned skin cancer centres globally today.

How long will I be standing in one position?

Usually less than 5 seconds.

How long will the appointment take?

Be prepared to spend approximately 45 mins for your appointment.

How much of my body will be imaged?

The 3D Mole Mapping imaging covers most of the skin surface. The Vectra 3D imaging device does not capture images of areas such as the scalp, underarms, bottom of the feet, or areas covered by garments. It may also have difficulty imaging areas with dense hair or natural skin folds.

How often do I need to do it?

Follow-up frequency will be determined by your healthcare provider based on your individual needs and risk factors.

Terms and conditions

3D Mole Mapping is a privately paid service available at the TELUS Health Care Centre in Vancouver for $499 per scan, plus applicable taxes. This service is not covered under the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).

3D Mole Mapping does not replace regular examinations or care from your primary care provider or dermatologist and does not guarantee the detection of all skin cancers or abnormalities. Certain areas of the body may not be captured by the imaging technology (such as the scalp, undergarment lines, or skin folds) .

If you have a lesion that is rapidly changing, bleeding, or concerning, do not wait for a 3D scan—seek immediate evaluation from a physician. Follow-up care may be recommended based on your individual results and should be provided by your primary care provider or other appropriate healthcare professional.

Coverage may vary by benefits plan. The service may be eligible for reimbursement through a health spending account; individuals should confirm coverage with their benefits provider.
